Prophète Named Harlem Ambassadors’ Coach
First Woman To Lead Professional Men’s Sports Team

The Harlem Ambassadors Show Basketball Team today announced the appointment of Ms. Sandie Prophète as Head Coach for the 1998-99 season with an option for the 1999-2000 season. Additional contract terms were not disclosed.

Ms. Prophète, from West Orange, New Jersey, is believed to be the first woman named to lead a predominately men’s team in a professional sport. Additionally, she will perform as a player for the Ambassadors. On the court, Ms. Prophète is known as Ladè Majic, Queen of Show Basketball.

"Growing up with older brothers, I was always surrounded by boys," Prophète observed, "and whenever they needed an extra player, I was their first pick. In those days, I was the only female on the team and I guess not too much has changed," she said.

A graduate of the University of Missouri, Ms. Prophète was selected as a member of the Big Eight Conference All-Decade Team for the 1980’s. She was the first female member to tour in the 30 year history of the renowned Harlem Wizards organization, joining NBA Hall of Famers like Connie Hawkins and Nate Archibald. Ultimately, she ascended to the featured "showperson" role with the Wizards.

In addition to her role in show basketball, Ms. Prophète has played competitive professional basketball overseas, including the 1997-98 season in Israel. She was recently invited to training camp with the New York Liberty of the WNBA.

Ms. Prophète has a Masters degree in counseling from Upsala College in New Jersey. Throughout her career, she has done considerable work educating youth in the dangers of AIDS, drugs, and violence. Her NO F*E*A*R (NO False Evidence Appearing Real Inc.) organization has been instrumental in these programs in her native New Jersey-New York area. She looks forward to continuing those programs in the Ambassadors’ home base of Colorado.

"My mother was a pediatric nurse who challenged me to overcome my fears and live my dreams," Prophète said. "Her life was committed to children and she always gave to youth. NO F*E*A*R was created to honor her memory and is my way of continuing that legacy," she added.
