Ladè Majic profiled in SLAM Magazine
Harlem Ambassadors Coach and Show Player Ladè Majic is profiled in the "HYPE" section of the November 2003 edition of SLAM, the monthly magazine the chronicles what's hot in the world of basketball.
"We're glad that SLAM has noticed that we aren't your grandfather's basketball show," observed Dale Moss, owner of the Ambassadors. The Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Show has been consistently judged as younger, fresher, and hipper than some other better-known shows.
Titled "UPTOWN GIRL," the SLAM piece, written by Lang Whittaker reads as follows:
When you call their offices, the receptionist lays it down: "Good afternoon, Harlem Ambassadors - it's not your grandfather's basketball show." The Ambassadors may be globetrotters in the literal sense, but their's a bit of magic that sets them apart. The team is not only coached by, but also led by, a woman, and quite a woman at that. She goes by the handle Ladè Majic, speaks French and English, grew up in Jersey, ran at Rucker and The Cage, played college ball at Missouri and has a master's degree in counseling psychology. Which makes her the perfect person to deliver the Ambassadors' over-arcing message.
"We've always stressed the importance of education," Majic says. "We don't have hypocrites on this team who tell kids to stay in school and get their degrees. We don't say 'Do as we say.' We say, 'Do as we do.'"
What they do is travel entertain and teach through hoops, playing over 200 games a year. And the 5-7 Majic has a new spell to cast: She's issued a challenge to play one-on-one against the Globetrotters' clown prince, 6-6 Paul "Showtime" Gaffney, with all proceeds going to charity.
When asked when and where she wants to play, Majic temporarily loses her smile. "Any time, any place." Not very Ladè-like. - LANG WHITTAKER
